Once we decided that we were going to take the leap, we had to plan our route. Where do we start? As an alum and Trustee of Semester at Sea (SAS), I knew that SAS (www.semesteratsea.org) would be part of our experience. We had originally thought that we would start our journey on SAS, but after thinking about it and speaking with others, it became clear that putting the Semester at Sea in the middle would be the best option. Having SAS in the middle would allow us to first travel on our own for 5 months. We would take this time to find our family “travel groove” as well as allow our children time to mature before joining the shipboard community of SAS. In that way, all 5 of us could get the most out of the educational opportunities on the ship. The rest of the route fell into place over the last 4-5 years and was inspired by stories from other families who had done similar trips, travel blogs, our family’s “bucket list” of places to see, and some of my favorite places from previous travel. It’s amazing how quickly we filled up 11 months!
The trip consists of three segments: 157 days on our own visiting 23 countries, 104 days on Semester at Sea visiting 11 countries, and 75 days in Europe details TBD.
